The Thames has
always been important to the town of Abingdon and today is a focal
point for many recreational activities. Riverside gardens, anglers
on the riverbanks and pleasure cruisers queue to pass through the
picturesque lock. Recent archaeological finds have proved that the
town has been continuously inhabited for 2,600 years, making it
'Britain's Oldest Town'.
