Adult kingfishers are extremely successful predators with almost every dive being rewarded with a catch. But this skill needs practice to perfect, since they must allow for both the angle of their dive and the refraction of light which distorts the true position of the fish. Many young kingfishers drown while they are learning as their feathers become waterlogged.
